[{"title": "Helping Islanders save millions on prescription drugs", "time": null, "end_time": null, "summary": "Helping Islanders save millions on prescription drugs jenniferdhogan Fri, 10/02/2026 - 11:28 As populations and the cost of drugs continue to grow, the Government of Canada and Prince Edward Island (PEI) are working together to make it easier for Islanders to access the prescription medications they need, while helping to reduce the cost of living. Today, the Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, on behalf of the Honourable Marjorie Michel, Canada’s Minister of Health, the Honourable Premier of PEI, Rob Lantz, and the Honourable Cory Deagle, Minister of Health and Wellness for PEI, announced the government intention to invest over $32 million over three years to support the Improving Affordable Access to Prescription Drugs Program (IAAPD) in PEI. The IAAPD program, launched in 2021, has funded targeted reforms to PEI’s public drug programs. PEI received $35 million (2021-22 to 2025-26) to expand its public formulary (list of publicly covered drugs) to broaden treatment options for Islanders and better align with public drug plans in other provinces and territories, lower out-of-pocket costs for residents, and gather insights and lessons learned. As of March 2025, the IAAPD has saved Islanders $13.8 million. Extending the IAAPD will allow PEI to maintain the improvements it has made to its public drug coverage system and help reduce the cost of living for its residents. Quotes \"We are working with PEI to make prescription drugs more affordable for Islanders. This renewed federal funding will help PEI maintain improvements to its public drug coverage and continue delivering savings for Islanders.” The Honourable Marjorie Michel Minister of Health “Whether it is making prescription drugs more affordable, supporting finding a home, or helping local businesses grow, our government is focused on making investments that deliver for Islanders and strengthen communities across Prince Edward Island. I’m proud to see Islanders benefit from programs like this, which are putting money back in people’s pockets and helping make life more affordable for families across our province.” The Honourable Heath MacDonald Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Member of Parliament for Malpeque \"The renewal of this agreement reflects our commitment to making prescription medications more affordable and accessible for Islanders. By continuing this partnership, we are helping Islanders access the medications they need, strengthening our health-care system, and putting more money back into the pockets of Islanders.\" -The Honourable Rob Lantz Premier of Prince Edward Island “This program has made a real difference for Islanders, helping people access the medications they need to manage their health and well-being. For Islanders, this renewal means lower drug costs, access to more medications and fewer barriers to getting the treatment they need.” The Honourable Cory Deagle Minister of Health and Wellness, Government of Prince Edward Island Quick Facts Since its launch in 2021, the IAAPD has helped the province expand its formulary (list of covered drugs) to broaden treatment options for Islanders to a level of coverage more comparable with other provinces and territories and improve the affordability of its drug plans (e.g., by lowering out-of-pocket payments for residents). Through IAAPD, PEI has made coverage improvements for Islanders, including: Expanded access to more than 100 medications, such as treatments for cancer and heart disease. Reduction of copays for commonly used cardiovascular, diabetes and mental health drugs, saving residents more than $9 million, with approximately 70% of these savings benefitting seniors. Delivery of no-cost treatment for alcohol and opioid use disorders to more than 1,200 Islanders through the Substance Use and Harm Reduction program. Expansion of the province's Community Mental Health Program to provide no-cost coverage of newer second-generation antipsychotic medications to long-term psychiatric patients. The 2025-2026 fiscal year ended with a deficit of $355.5 million. This was $94.1 million lower than forecast in spring 2026, as part of the operating budget estimates. “Islanders expect us to manage the finances responsibly and these Public Accounts demonstrate that we are taking action on responsible fiscal management. Our strong economy has helped increase revenues, and we’re within our target fiscal anchors. We’re positioning our province for sustainable future growth while continuing to invest in what matters most to Islanders.” - Minister of Finance and Affordability Jill Burridge Revenues for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, were just over $3.3 billion. This is $192.7 million higher than in 2024-25 and $45.5 million above the 2026 spring forecast. The increase from spring 2026 forecast was mainly due to higher than anticipated provincial corporate tax revenue. Expenditures for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, were just over $3.6 billion. Key areas of expenditure include: $1.4 billion in Health and Wellness and Health PEI $475.2 million in Education and Early Years $232.0 million in Social Development and Seniors $223.1 million in Transportation and Infrastructure $200.8 million in Workforce, Advanced Learning and Population Net debt at March 31, 2026, was $3.7 billion, or 32.3 per cent of GDP, reflecting strong ongoing investments in tangible capital assets. This new service will give people with disabilities more flexibility to get to work, attend appointments and activities, visit family and friends, or simply get where they need to go without having to plan every trip in advance. We are very excited to see this project come to fruition and to partner on an initiative that helps make Charlottetown and the capital region more accessible for everyone.” - Mayor of Charlottetown Philip Brown “The Town of Cornwall is proud to have been a part of the collaborative efforts that have brought this project into the reality of Cudmore’s Accessible Cab. This initiative will make it easier for Islanders to get around by removing travel barriers, making the Island more inclusive.” - Mayor of Cornwall Minerva McCourt “The Town of Stratford is a proud partner in this project. We know we have residents that will directly benefit from this much-needed service, allowing them to participate and attend events and activities that fall outside of the existing hours of service provided. We are pleased to be working alongside all partners to recognize and support this needed service that is now available.” - Mayor of Stratford Steve Ogden “At Pat & The Elephant, we believe transportation should never be a barrier to participating in community life. Cudmore’s Accessible Cab is an important step toward providing residents and visitors with disabilities the freedom to travel safely, spontaneously, and with dignity throughout the capital region. Join us on Tuesday, October 20th, 12pm | Mill River Resort. Free registration. Seating is limited. Click here to register! Event Description: Coltin Handrahan founded Stay Golden Custom in his senior year of high school and over the past 14 years has grown it into a custom apparel company with business clients from coast to coast and their production still taking place in rural Hunter River. For 14 years he ran the company as a non-technical founder, paying for off-the-shelf software that never quite fit how their business worked. Last December, that changed. Leveraging AI-powered tools, Coltin began building his own custom coded apps: quoting, production, and sales tools designed around exactly how his team works. The results reshaped his business, and the approach is within reach of any owner, no coding background required. This lunch and learn covers the real story: what he built, what it changed, and the specific tactics an Island business can use to leverage this technology and compete on the national stage. Practical, direct, and built for small business owners. About the presenter: Coltin Handrahan is the founder of Stay Golden Custom, a custom apparel and branded merch company based in Hunter River, PEI, serving clients coast to coast. A non-technical founder of 14 years, he now “vibe coded” his company's own software and speaks about making that leap accessible to any business owner. Please note: We are also offering this Lunch and Learn on Thursday, October 22nd, 12pm at Rodd Brudenell River Resort - Register here! Both sessions feature the same presentation and content.
